What is the difference between an Xbox LIVE Gold membership and an Xbox LIVE Silver membership?

Q. I'm getting the Xbox 360 Pro console in a few weeks, it includes the console, the cables, the headset and a 60GB hard drive. It also says on the box that it has a 1 month free Xbox LIVE Silver Membership. At stores, I see 12 month subscriptions to Xbox LIVE (Gold Membership) for $59.99, what's the difference between Gold memberships and Silver memberships?

A. congrats on the xbox. Silver memberships are free. They come with free game demos, movie rentals, tv downloads, game add ons, downloadable arcade games. avatars ,and video and text chat. Gold memberships will cost you. You can get a three month card for about 20.00. They can do everything a silver membership can do and a few others. Video chat, online multiplayer gaming so you can play with other people from around the world, earlier access to never before seen content, NETFLIX, discounts, xbox live parties, and photo sharing

Why do people say that Xbox Live is worth buying a 360 over a PS3?
Q. I have Xbox Live and PSN and the only big difference between the two is that I have to pay $50 for 13 months of service. Xbox Live doesn't pay my bills, it doesn't take out the trash, it doesn't give me free downloadable games that aren't demos and the NXE layout is kind of confusing when you're trying to find a demo really quickly. So what about it is greater than PSN in terms of service?

A. All your points are valid, I dont know much about the PSN since I dont have a PS3 :( But as far as the xbox goes, it has a high volume of online games and the gaming community is HUGE. They also have been able to release patches quickly for games, patches that take less that 15 seconds to install, your also paying for the super servers that they are renting out to let games run at fastest speeds possible *gives angry look at Gears 2* The PSN may be doing the same thing, I dont know, I only pay every so often when I know I will be playing. But yea...Its kinda steep.

A. well for most people buying their systems, money isnt an issue. A lot of these systems will go out to kids in high school or middle school and they wont be paying for the bill so they dont take that into consideration. i think the 2 live systems are pretty much the same and that one isnt better then the other, but the real thing is that people would rather play with their friends. if they have a 360 they'll say its live is better then the ps3's so their friend gets a 360 and can play with him. its all perspective.
